Pregnancy yoga hints and tips

If you are less than 15 weeks pregnant please allow some time at this early stage to let your body adjust.  There will be plenty of time to practice after you've reached 15 weeks.

If you are over 15 weeks you may now begin practicing, here's how to get the most out of your pregnancy yoga class:

·         Eat a snack before class, like a banana or cereal bar, this will keep up your blood sugar levels.

·         Avoid lying on your stomach or very deep twists at the waist.

·         Also avoid abdominal exercises until after your baby is born.

·         Don't stretch too much. Pregnant women secrete relaxin hormones that make their ligaments and tendons looser. Protect your joints by always working to your minimum.

·         Breathe, never hold your breathTake nice long breaths at your own breathing rate.

·         Lower back pain is a common pregnancy complaint. Avoid deep backbends that may not help the condition.

·         If you are over 30 weeks pregnant you are to avoid any deep unsupported squatting exercises. For the relaxation part of the class it is recommended you lie on your left side.

But don't worry about trying to remember all that, I will guide you safely through.

The most important thing is you take some time out to relax, enjoy the class and let the magic of yoga benefit both yourself and your baby.

Me and yoga

I have been practicing yoga for over 12 years, I initially started as I was working in a highly stressful job in London and was searching for relaxation and a way to escape the daily grind.  Now it has become my way of life.

I am a qualified British School of Yoga Hatha Yoga Teacher - BSYA. I have been a member of the British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) since 2005 and have completed a BWY Foundation Course with them.

I am listed as a Yoga Teacher with the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS)www.exerciseregister.org

I am a registered Hatha and pregnancy yoga teacher, based in Worcester Park, Surrey, with Yoga Pages www.yogapages.co.uk   This a useful place to get more information about yoga related issues.

I hold valid first aid certificates for adults and children.

Through my training and experience I believe that practicing yoga during pregnancy is a beautiful and enriching experience for both mother and baby. It really is the best time to discover the true joy of yoga.
